Tis the Season for Workplace Safety for the Holidays

The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, but it can also bring unique challenges to the workplace in terms of safety.  As workplaces decorate, host events, and experience an increase in activities, it’s crucial to prioritize safety to ensure a happy and healthy holiday season for everyone.  Consider these tips as you enter the holiday season…

Decorations and Lighting

  • Be sure that all holiday decorations are UL listed and in good condition
  • Do not obstruct walkways, emergency exits, or firefighting equipment
  • Follow ladder safety guidelines when installing/removing decorations at heights

– Set ladder on a flat surface with a 4:1 ratio to ensure stability

  • Maintain 3-point contact, and work with a buddy
  • Do not stand on top rung and stand in the center of your ladder
  • Turn off lighted decorations when not working

Fire Safety

  • Do not use open-flame candles. Consider battery operated candles instead.
  • Do not overload circuits. Limit extension cords and NEVER daisy chain.
  • If decorating a tree, use an artificial one. Real trees increase fire risk when they dry out.

Office Parties and Events

  • Be mindful of cultural or personal preferences. Make attendance voluntary for holiday events.
  • Refrain from alcohol use at company sponsored parties.
  • Maintain noise levels at acceptable levels to limit hearing disturbances.
  • Set guidelines for gift exchanges to ensure appropriateness and safety.
  • Be prepared for unexpected injury/illness. Keep a first aid kit on hand.

Managing Workplace Stress

  • Be mindful that holidays can be difficult times for some employees.
  • Encourage open communication with staff.
  • Consider organization stress-relief activities and wellness events during the holiday season.

 Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

  • Keep exterior walkways and parking lots clear of ice and snow.
  • Be sure building entrances and leading walkways are well-lit.
  • Ensure that floors are keep clean and offer appropriate traction.
  • Ensure that entrances are free of wet floors due to rain, snow, ice.
  • Offer umbrella bags at entrances during inclement weather to reduce water accumulation.
  • Keep interior walkways and stairways free of clutter that can produce trip/falls.
